The Laundromat Review by Lime Agency

an entertaining movie by Netflix that will let you understand everything there is to know about the Panama Papers.

By now, the The Panama Papers, leaked in 2015, might have been forgotten by some. However, what they revealed is still very much of a topic today and it should continue to be. This is why I find this movie so important. With The Laundromat, Soderbergh has managed to take a complicated topic and made it comprehensible and, moreover, interesting. The star packed film, made for Netflix, is full of Soderbergh’s corky storytelling.

A Whistleblower Saga

The Laundromat is designed as a whistleblower saga. A retired woman, played by Meryl Streep, is trying to claim insurance back from a boat accident that killed her husband. She soon realises the insurance company is just an empty shell. Consequently, she sets off on a journey, not necessarily to get the money back, but to get an apology. On her way, she unveils the intricacy and complexity of our new world order.

The film is using Ramón Fonseca (Gary Oldman) and Jürgen Mossack (Antonio Banderas) – founders of Mossack Fonseca, as narrators. Two glittering suits absurdly explaining and reasoning their role as players in the global tax evasion scheme.

The fact that it is a movie AND that it is produced for Netflix, I believe, opens the door for the topic of global tax evasion to be presented to a wider audience. Presenting this serious topic as entertainment, reaches people that might not have had the possibility to properly understand the situation back in 2015. In addition, when watching a movie at home, you can pause, rewind and even take time to check up on articles online.

A Movie That Inspires Action

For my sake, it’s a movie that inspired me to take the action to learn more about what had changed since 2015. In addition, I started to reflect about what I can do, as an individual, to end this madness. My answer: base my understanding of the world on trusted sources and use my voting right to express my opinion.

5/5 Fresh Limes
